How to Pig Out in Paris and Stay a Shrimp

Several readers sent me a recent article about Mireille Guiliano’s new book “French Women Don’t Get Fat.” At the same time, my accountant informed me that after compiling a complete analysis of my dining out that last year, I had recorded 219 restaurant meals (4.2 per week) at an average cost of $25.08. Perhaps I eat out more than most — but of course I’m also taste-testing for the “Insider Paris Guide for Good Value Restaurants” (just updated last week with over 200 of my favorites).

My budget wasn’t broken (at such a deal for the usual two to three courses plus wine and coffee including tax and tip) and neither was the scale. In fact, this past year, I lost 15 pounds all while dining on foie gras and fondant au chocolat.

“French women don’t get fat, but they do eat bread and pastry, drink wine, and regularly enjoy three-course meals. In her delightful tale, Mireille Guiliano unlocks the simple secrets of this ‘French paradox’ — how to enjoy food and stay slim and healthy. Hers is a charming, sensible, and powerfully life-affirming view of health and eating for our times.”

Mireille was a slender French exchange student who went to the States and came back fat. I can relate…I come back fat every time I visit the States, especially when I spend time in New Orleans, where cuisine is sublime and portions are huge. I chuckle every time someone there tells me I’m too “skinny” — it seems apparent that like the American political left resembles more the French political right, so does the American idea of skinny resemble more the French idea of fat.

For Mireille, after consulting the family physician, reinstalling basic principles of French gastronomy, she discovered the key to staying slim and trim was not having guilt or deprivation, but learning to get the most from the things she most enjoyed. I concur! With some help from reducing carbohydrates (one less croissant with coffee and trading “haricots verts” for “pommes frites”) and limiting your consumption of wine (purely worthless calories), life in France, and particularly in Paris, where you get endless amounts of natural exercise just walking or mounting Métro stairs, will keep you fit as a fiddle and thin as a rail — all without guilt for indulging on such decadent fare as foie gras or fondant au chocolat.

Her book really caught my attention, because a few years ago, I wrote my own account — “How to Pig Out in Paris and Stay a Shrimp” or “How to Eat without Guilt!” — my advice for ten ways of keeping off the excess weight — http://www.westernwebwork.net/stayingslim.html

And to read the article about “French Women Don’t Get Fat” in it’s entirety, visit http://www.randomhouse.com/knopf/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=140004212, or for more about the author, visit http://www.mireilleguiliano.com/

And now a report on yesterday’s Parler Paris Après Midi:

Thirty readers turned up, one-third of which were old-timers, the rest new faces we were happy to get to know. Magda Theodate bumped into long-time friend, Felicia Shelton, who she hadn’t seen in years and Marla Kaplan’s new furry friend fell in love with Hat Sternstein, American entrepreneur in the throws of launching “Mon Bon Chien.”

If you didn’t make, don’t fret. Just have a read all about it (complete with pictures) at /parlerparis/apresmidi.html and plan on coming to the next one February 8th. French Property Insider Property Manager Yolanda Robins will be hosting it while I’m partying at Mardi Gras in New Orleans (the first time in more than 30 years!)

A la prochaine…

Adrian Leeds
Editor, Parler Paris

P.S. Our next trip to New Orleans is just around the corner, so I’m sure to come back fat and having loved every minute of it. Join in the fun and soak up the knowledge with me and the Parler Paris staff at the “Living and Investing in France Conference,” February 11 – 13, 2005, Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, /frenchproperty/conference/LIF_NOLA/LIF_NOLA_home.html

Cultural crossings speaker, Ruth Mastron, and I, have been invited to speak at the annual membership dinner February 14th of the French-American Chamber of Commerce in New Orleans. We look forward to meeting with the Francophile business leaders of New Orleans (my home town) and sharing new ways we can work together! Seminar Series on Children and Mental Health at the AMERICAN LIBRARY IN PARIS

Dr. Bénédicte de Boysson-Bardies – Development of Language in the Young Child Human beings belong to a species endowed with a remarkable capability: the ability to communicate using an articulate language that allows the rapid transmission of complex information. The infant acquires this knowledge very quickly. How is this possible? What are these innate abilities, how do they develop in the course of the two first years of the infant’s life, and what factors in the infant’s familiar environment assist in this process? Dr. Bénédicte de Boysson-Bardies will speak in French with questions in both languages.

THE DOLLAR: WEAK OR STRONG?
A DEBATE

What does the decline of the dollar mean for the US and the world economy? Is it pointing toward a world financial crisis? Is it simply a reaction to current trends in the American economy? Where does the dollar go from here? Are the Bush administration and the Fed pursuing the right policy with regard to the dollar? The answers tend to divide along political lines. Perceptions about the performance of the American economy (GNP, inflation, savings, interest rates, federal spending, deficits and taxes) figure and differ, particularly among Democrats and Republicans. International economists, bankers and businessmen will discuss these crucial issues and other

related ones.

Ronald Freeman, European real estate/emerging markets investor, former partner investment banking head, Solomon Brothers/Citigroup, VP of ERBD Banking Department

Astro-Paris by Eric Francis
====================

This is a short edition, as I’m wrapping up the 2005 annual horoscope, Bridge to the Core, which you can learn more about here: http://planetwaves.net/2005horoscope.html

This week, on Monday, we passed through the Capricorn New Moon, really, truly and officially ending 2004 and beginning 2005. The first New Moon after the winter solstice is called Tet, the New Year holiday through much of Asia. It makes more sense to start the year on a New Moon than it does to start it arbitrarily using a calendar, because the New Moon feels like a beginning, and creates a consistent celestial pattern that commences each year. Most of what our sense of the “new year” lacks is precisely that shift in continuity. However, on this and other accounts, this New Moon really was a beginning, as both Venus and Mercury also entered Capricorn around the time of the lunation and are currently making a long, exquisite conjunction in the early degrees of that sign. This is excellent for business, for solidifying commitments, and generally good for getting your feet on the ground emotionally and mentally. That’s not chicken liver.

Happy Birthday, Capricorn! The world is a strange place these days, and there seem to be few reasons for hope. But nature is full of surprises. One theme of 2005 is suddenly becoming clear: that despite all odds to the contrary, the truth comes out, and that it matters. You’re likely to find yourself in many situations where you become the source of that truth. But it gets much more personal than this. There is such a thing as integrity, and it’s available to everyone who chooses it as a way of life — and that is a choice you seem to be making as if it really mattered. It does. In the end, it’s up to each of us to feel honest within our own souls based on our actions and words — and to know this is changing the world. Nothing else can.
