Il Casse, She’s a Purl, Iconic Art and La Nuit Americaine

IL CASSE. ET IL CASSE. ET IL CASSE.”

 Brice 3

You don’t need a high level of French to get it. In fact you don’t need French at all. Jean Dujardin will have you in stitches and even a bit nauseated at times in his latest Brice 3 film as he brushes his teeth with his blonde-haired toothbrush or forces a colleague to eat a jellyfish as you watch the parts spill out of his mouth and you cringe. There’s a little too much painful slapstick for my taste (as he “casse les gens” — breaks people), but there’s no doubt that Dujardin can twist his face into such contortions and be so insanely silly that you can’t help but laugh, even if you’re embarrassed that you find it funny.

Where is it playing in the U.S. you ask? I’ve been trying to find out…but no luck yet.

LINDA PURL WAS A PEARL AT CLUB RAYE

I have to hand it to Linda Purl. She not only survived a spectator who insisted on drumming along with her on “n’importe quoi” (whatever, including a glass vase and the piano) and a lame piano player who didn’t know what song to play next, but she managed to croon beautifully to a full house in the KafKa Kabaret at Club RaYé Saturday night. You might remember her as Ben Matlock’s daughter, Charlene, in the Andy Griffith series in the late ’80’s or as the one-time, but short-lived wife of Desi Arnaz, Jr. Other performances you might remember were in Happy Days (Richie’s girlfriend), in several episodes of Murder She Wrote and Criminal Minds as Ms. Everson.

We hope the club’s Kein Cross invites her back for more (as long as she teams up with better back-up — although that was half the fun!).

ICONS OF MODERN ART

The French call it the La Collection Chtchoukine, while in English it’s the Shchukin Collection and promoted as the “Icônes de l’Art Moderne” (Icons of Modern Art) having just opened Saturday at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The crowds on this first Sunday afternoon were exceptional, but worth the wait in one queue after another to see 130 works from the entire collection of 275 — the ones we’ve seen in books, but never in person until now.

Sergei Shchukin was a wealthy textile merchant in Moscow who had an eye for art before his time and was criticized for having been “duped” by the dealers as he amassed a collection of work between 1989 and 1914 by such artists as Monet, Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso and Matisse, among others. The collection is housed in the Pushkin in Moscow and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg — and now here’s your chance to be see it and be overwhelmed, on display until February 20, 2017.

In particular, the room of Matisse paintings took my breath away, as an aficionado of his works and having designed my own apartment in Nice around his colorful palette (“Le Matisse”). As you float from one room to another viewing the monumental works of art, you will certainly be as impressed and enthralled as I was.

The museum itself is a work of art by American architect Frank Gehry. Artist Daniel Buren recently added colored panels of 13 different hues to the one-time all-white facade, “accentuating the ship-like structure’s 12 billowing sails” (as described by Architectural Digest). If you haven’t seen it for a while, as I hadn’t, it’s a new bright light on the Paris landscape. Those attracted to this museum appear to be a cut above from the average museum-goer — fewer tourists, and more of the well-heeled French aristocracy, beautifully dressed and haughtily arrogant.

Getting there is easy when you take the free Bluebus shuttle that departs every 15 minutes during museum hours from the corner of Avenue Friedland at the Etoile just at the Métro station. And the best way to visit the Fondation Louis Vuitton is to reserve your tickets for 11:45 a.m. and then once inside go immediately to Le Frank restaurant under Gehry’s big fish for lunch so that you aren’t starving while you’re visiting the exhibitions and museum (there is NOTHING to eat anywhere else in the museum and only one coffee bar on one of the terraces). There are no reservations, so the the sooner you get in the queue, the better. It’s a bit pricey, but the quality and ambiance is well worth it.

It’s not a perfect situation at this fairly new museum…at least, no yet. They need more places where one can rest one’s feet, more spots where one can snack and drink, more spots where one can buy mementos…as this is a place where one can spend an entire day, that is if the amenities where there, but they aren’t…at least, not yet.
