In The Heart Of The Paris Thrills

Very often I feel the need to “pinch” myself to believe that living in Paris isn’t just a dream. I remember feeling the same way at the age of 17 when I landed for the first time in New York City headed for college, and I looked up at the tall buildings in awe — was I really a part of it?

Picnicking at the Eiffel Tower on the evening of Bastille Day with both old and new friends, a cornucopia of gourmet goodies spread at our feet and the sensation of the annual fireworks “ballet” is just one of those pinchable moments.

On route by taxi with a marketing caddy packed with picnic gear, the excitement of the event was mounting as our taxi driver tried maneuvering around the “embouteillage” (traffic jam) to get us closer to the Champ de Mars. Hundreds of thousands of people streamed onto the grassy plains of the Champ de Mars, spread their blankets, passed bottles of wine, cheese and patés and prepared their digital cameras for every photo op. This year the fireworks started on time, each segment choreographed to a selection of music, each set in a different color theme, coordinated with lighting of the tower itself — all done brilliantly, elegantly and delicately…one hour of non-stop visual electricity. It was what I would call a masterful ballet and we were awestruck by the beauty.

I became more of an urbanite after living fourteen years in a very beautiful part of rural America where blooming trees were the most exciting events of the year. After so much time, it wasn’t solitude that I wanted, but thrills. In Paris, there is no shortage of that.

I know, however, that not everyone shares my love for man-made architectural wonders, art collections amassed under one huge roof, the sound of a neighbor’s piano playing in the afternoons and shoulder-to-shoulder chic boutiques. In fact, in general we often note that Americans who are used to having lots of land and space are more interested in urban living than their British counterparts who have limited space, densely inhabited cities and long for the countryside.

Lucky for all, France offers both.

If you’re an urbanite to the core (like me) or just madly in love with Paris and all it has to offer (like me), then you’ll want to live as close to the center as you can (like me). Today we offer you some samples of apartment life in the first arrondissement…it just doesn’t get any more central then that.
