Independence Day Paris Parties

Independence is what July is all about. Whether Canadian (July 1st), American (July 4th), or French (July 14th), we will be celebrating freedom this coming month.

So you won’t seem as uninformed as I felt when Parler Paris Assistant Lynda Sydney, a Torontonian, mentioned “Canada day,” here are some basic facts about our various commemorative days of liberty:

July 1st, Canada Day

On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty’s loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st. The July 1 holiday was established by statute in 1879, under the name “Dominion Day.” On October 27, 1982, July 1st which was known as “Dominion Day” became “Canada Day.” Quebec provincial governments under the Parti Québécois refused to recognize the celebration. Due to a particularity in colonial New France, Quebec celebrates Canada Day by mass movements of people changing residences. This is known as Moving Day.

July 4th, Independence day, USA

Independence Day is regarded as the birthday of the United States as a free and independent nation. Most Americans simply call it the “Fourth of July,” on which date it always falls. The holiday recalls the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. At that time, the people of the 13 British colonies located along the eastern coast of what is now the United States were involved in a war over what they considered unjust treatment by the king and parliament in Britain. The Declaration of Independence, signed by leaders from the colonies, stated this clearly, and for the first time in an official document the colonies were referred to as the United States of America.

July 14th, Bastille day, France

Bastille day, is the symbol of the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the French Republic. On May 5, 1789, the King convened the Estates General to hear their complaints, but the assembly of the Third Estate, representing the citizens of the town, soon broke away and formed the Constituent National Assembly. On June 20, 1789, the deputies of the Third Estate took the oath of the Jeu de Paume “to not separate until the Constitution had been established.” The Deputies’ opposition was echoed by public opinion. The people of Paris rose up and decided to march on the Bastille, a state prison that symbolized the absolutism and arbitrariness of the Ancien Regime. The storming of the Bastille, on July 14, 1789, immediately became a symbol of historical dimensions; it was proof that power no longer resided in the King or in God, but in the people, in accordance with the theories developed by the philosophers of the 18th century. For all citizens of France, the storming of the Bastille symbolizes, liberty, democracy and the struggle against all forms of oppression.

Independence Day for me conjures up juicy burgers on the barbecue grill. Every year here in Paris, I re-enact a back yard barbecue as well as I can, but without the back yard. I buy lean ground beef, burger buns, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup and relish and I ask American friends to join me, adding Cole slaw, baked beans, potato chips, pickles, brownies, ice cream and watermelon to the equation.

A real home-made American-style burger can be absolutely heaven and the memories of the sounds of “hmmm” in unison as we all took our first bites, the juice running down our cheeks, are forever branded on my brain. Lynda remembers Canada Day much like I remember Fourth of July — with fireworks, barbecues and gatherings with family and friends.

We have not been able to uncover any organ

ized event here in Paris on July 4th for the American Community — what a shame that no one has taken on this project.

Bastille Day takes on even more fanfare here in France. On July 13th, we put on our dancing shoes and swingy skirts for the annual Bals des Pompiers. At 40 of the fire stations around Paris and the Ile de France, band stands and beer stands will be erected and manned for an all-night fest (9 a.m. to 4 a.m.) either one or both nights of July 13th and 14th.

The station at 7, rue de Sevigné in the 4th is one of the city’s finest…two big beautiful Marais courtyards, filled with strong able heroes and damsels wishing they were in distress. There is nothing quite as sexy as a French fireman…I know one American woman who met her mate at last year’s party. You can bet I’ll be there!

Then on July 14th, we can all kick back and relax by watching the annual parade down the Champs-Elysées (11 a.m. starting at the Arc de Triomphe), before heading to the Champs de Mars for a picnic in the evening as we wait for the sun to set and the incredible display of fireworks over the Eiffel Tower to begin. The French are piro-geniuses…there is nothing quite as exciting as seeing the bursts of colorful light silhouetting the statuesque Grande Dame herself.

This is a formal and public apology to my readers for my poor “choice” of words in Monday’s newsletter reporting on the Gay Pride Parade. So many of you faithful followers wrote me to point out the error in my words.

Here are a couple of comments I received correcting my statement that “many people around us have chosen this alternative lifestyle”:

“A wee correction: being gay is not an “alternative lifestyle” that is “chosen.” There is growing evidence that homosexuality is biologically determined – people don’t choose to be gay any more than they choose to have red hair or blue eyes. My godson (now 21) was pretty obviously gay from the time he was 2 years old!”

“I know your comment was sincere, but, in fact, as any truly gay/lesbian/bisexual person (and their loved ones) know, it is not at all a ‘chosen alternative lifestyle,’ but rather a matter of whether or not one chooses to accept oneself as one truly is and thus, even share the ‘news’ with others, especially with those who may be supportive.”

So, I stand corrected and now more aware than ever — the point of Gay Pride, no?
