The Perfect Paris Place to Be

I don’t recall ever having missed a “Fête de la Musique,” some being more memorable than others for both good and bad reasons. When the weather is cold and rainy, it can be miserable. If you get caught in a crowd where moving in any direction is impossible or dangerous, it can be frightening. Last night’s festival goes down in the memory books as “perfect.”

The weather was breezy and balmy, sultry and sexy. We planned a tentative route that would take us circling the Marais to most of the key spots, with the ability to divert at any moment, keeping in mind which performances were taking place where and when. The sentiment among the group — “Whatever we do and see will be delightful.” And so, it was.

As we headed toward our first destination, we wandered into a few of the Marais courtyards we don’t normally get to see, their oversized doors open in the spirit of the occasion. Adorned with statuary, walls covered in ivy, cobblestones kept in perfect condition, with their tall, elegant windows looking out onto tranquil squares, these hôtel particuliers of centuries past are very much a part of Paris’ present and without a doubt, its future, built to last an eternity.

The Place des Vosges never ceases to be the jewel in the crown, musicians and choral groups under the arcades, including some very young and talented flutists, no older than eight years. The acoustics under the brick arches help make any amateur at any age sound like a seasoned professional.

Leaving the Place through the narrow door at the southwest corner opened up to a world of progressive jazz performed on a tented stage to an enormous audience camped out on the garden at the Hôtel Sully. The scene was surrealistic in the early evening light, the bright green ivy densely covering the eastern wall of the courtyard, the magnificent 17th-century hôtel particulier a soft backdrop to a sea of appreciative listeners.

We dined on the Place du Marché Sainte Catherine with traditional Yiddish songs played and sung on the small stage in the center of the Place. For several of us in the group, this music of our Russian-Polish-Jewish heritage evoked pleasant memories of our childhoods, when our parents spoke Yiddish among themselves so we couldn’t understand…and from all the Bar Mitzvahs and weddings we may have attended where there was sure to be at least a song or two from the “schtetls” where our grandparents were born. We deemed it “the perfect place to be.”

At Place Igor Stravinsky, where Niki de Saint Phalle’s whimsical sculptures turn and spit water into the fountain, the Centre Georges Pompidou looming in the background, a pianist with several layers of electronic keyboards entertained an adoring crowd sitting on the steps and at the cafés lining the Place. Salsa dancers in white flared-skirted halter dresses with partners in white and black jackets twirled and swayed their hips to the rhythmic Latin beat at the north end of the fountain.

The sun set about that time and the crowds in the Marais got thicker, as we then wandered through the historic streets in the direction of the Mairie of the 3rd arrondissement. A long line to enter the concert at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme in the Hôtel de Saint-Aignan discouraged us from entering, but with a peek over the crowd, we could glimpse the ensemble playing in the magnificent courtyard. Around the corner, the Hôtel Guénégaud des Brosses that houses the Musée de la Chasse, had its doors wide open where a small jazz band and singer performed under golden lights. The rooms of the museum were open and lit for all to see
the stunning moldings and chandeliers, set like a backdrop creating a natural stage.

Brazilian was playing on the “parvis” of the Mairie. La Pierre du Marais, the café that hosts our monthly “Après Midi,” had taken every chair it owns from its upper level to place on the sidewalk. We were lucky to run into friends dining there and capture some extra chairs for one final drink before heading home…

And calling it a “perfect evening”.

A la prochaine…

Reading: COLM TOIBIN
June 22 at 7 p.m.

COLM TOIBIN presents his latest novel THE MASTER.

“…The Master tells the story of a man (Henry James) born into one of America’s first intellectual families who leaves his country in the
late nineteenth century…. Toibin captures the loneliness and the hope of a master of psychological subtlety whose forays into intimacy inevitably failed those he tried to love. The emotional intensity of
this portrait is riveting.”

Toibin is the author of four other novels, The South, The Heather Blazing, The Story of the Night, and The Blackwater Lightship.

POETRY READING

Gerald Fleming reads from Swimmer Climbing onto Shore
Monday, June 27, 2005
Shakespeare and Company Books
37

, rue de la Bucherie
75005 Paris

Gerald Fleming’s poetry and prose poems have appeared in literary magazines over the past twenty-five years. He’s won numerous awards and fellowships, and between 1995 and 2000 he edited and published the literary magazine Barnabe Mountain Review, whose archives were Acquired by U.C. Berkeley’s Bancroft Library. He teaches full-time in the San Francisco public schools, and his third book for teachers, Rain, Steam, and Speed (j2999sey-Bass/Wiley) appeared in fall 2004.

Praise for Swimmer Climbing onto Shore:

“Reader, you are in for a treat with this book. Gerald Fleming’s beautiful poems will surprise you with their combination of incisive text and humane meditative background. Love is the catalyst, but so also is wit, unexpected and inexorably delivered… The result is a book stuffed with insight and delights.”
– Diana OHehir, author of Spells for Not Dying Again

“Fleming gifts us with a rare generosity, revealing the ‘extra’ in the so-called ‘ordinary’ experiences of travel, friendship, and family ties in our daily lives. In a voice of condensed, colloquial intimacy sobered by awareness of the world’s menace and acknowledging the irrational in himself, he reaches a high compassionate humor as he infuses his exploration with the surprising pleasure of sudden discovery. As he himself says, ‘It has to do with joy.’”
– Jack Marshall, author of Gorgeous Chaos: New & Selected Poems, 1965-2001

SPECIAL WINE TASTING: SUMMER WINES FROM EXOTIC PLACES.
Featuring Wine Expert Paul Tracy

HAPPY HOUR. DINNER. PRESENTATION. DISCUSSION.

Our guest of honor will be:

Paul Tracy
Wine Expert

We’ll begin the evening by tasting a Spanish Caba (Sparkling Wine). Then we’ll taste and learn about wines from Argentina, South Africa and Australia.

Paul Tracy was born and raised in England but 25 years ago made the wise decision to to France. After an early career in advertising, he was lured into the wine and spirit trade in Cognac and then Paris. Roaming the world for Moët Hennessy gave him a taste for wine from strange places, which triggered a new business venture 5 years ago – Fine Wine World selling wines from all over the world in France. Initially a web-based enterprise, subsequently on a broader scale, FWW imports wine from 15 different countries ranging from Australia, South Africa, Argentina to California.

The startling improvements made in viticulture and wine making over the past 20 years have convinced Paul that there has never been so much good wine made across the globe as there is now.

To find out more about Fine Wine World and the Fine Wine Club, please visit: http://www.fine-wine-world.com
