Paris 3Rd Movin’ And Shakin’

Living in the 3rd arrondissement gets more exciting every day. I don’t know if this is true for all residents of all arrondissements, but I do know that “Paris Bouge” — the slogan Mayor Bertrand Delanoë adopted to describe how the city is “movin’ and shakin.” And boy, is it ever!

He used these words last night at the “Conseil d’Arrondissement” with Mayor Pierre Aidenbaum by his side in the Salles des Fêtes of the Mairie of the 3rd where there was standing room only thanks to all the residents who came to see what they both had to say. This was one of many town hall meetings he has planned to officiate over the course of the next year, in all Paris districts. He talked about this during his meeting with Mayor Anthony Williams of Washington, DC.

This afternoon kicks off “Les Nuits Americaines” — a weekend long list of cultural activities designed to explore American culture (in order to help the French understand it better!), with the city hall and immediate environs take center stage. You can count on me being there to show my support as an American resident of the “quartier.”

Next week I have a private meeting with Mayor Aidenbaum (can you see the excitement on my face!?) at which I will let him know how much we, particularly the American community, appreciate all they are doing to raise our quality of life and that we (me and others like me) would be delighted to liaison between the communities — all in the interest of building solid Franco-American relations.

Property values are rising steadily as the arrondissement is gaining in popularity and improvements are being made — such as the renovation to rue de Bretagne I’ve written you about before. No one seems to mind the big mess the sidewalks are in, knowing that by the end of November, we’ll have sidewalks double in width, 60 new trees and new elegant street lamps the entire length of the ancient street. I’m the last to voice a complaint…my apartment has tripled in value since I bought it four years ago.

For those of you with smaller budgets seeking a pied-à-terre that has rental income potential, the 3rd is still one of the city’s best buys. And with all the improvement activity from the city hall, it’s sure to be high on the appreciation scale as well. More streets are designated to become pedestrian, my own being one of them, and when that happens, property there will become even more valuable. I’m not complaining.

I can give you lots of reasons to fall in love with the 3rd, and I have lots of friends that can, too, even if it it’s only for a visit. For example, visit Pascal Fonquernie’s apartment rental site at http://www.parismarais.com and make use of all the information-rich pages he offers about Le Marais, just because he loves it so. Click on http://www.parismarais.com/fra_adresses.htm and then the link on the left called “Shopping Guide” for a listing of his favorite shops in the neighborhood and if you want to read a step-by-step guided stroll through the Marais (I wrote very recently for inclusion in a soon-to-be-published guidebook), click on “Historical Marais.”

And if you want to drool over what’s possible to call your own,

scroll down to see the little gems we dug up for some of you with those smaller budgets…right here in the 3rd.

A la prochaine…
