Paris Election Watch Never Ends
As I write, CNN is background torture as we suffer through what could be weeks before we have an outcome to this presidential election. Last night at Joe Allen Restaurant, a packed house sat at communal tables, munched on an assortment of finger food while the CNN election reporting loomed overhead on TV monitors throughout the two dining rooms.
The crowd was both young and old, almost exclusively American and clearly favoring one candidate. One young man from California boldly stood up, got the crowd’s attention, explained who he was and where he was from, then toasted the election and his own political viewpoint. There was no rebuttal — only a big applause. Every once in a while, someone would start a “ssshhing” campaign to get everyone quieted down so we could hear what the commentators had to say.
Yesterday everywhere I went, the French I came in contact with commented on the election. They have very strong feelings about how this election will affect them and the rest of the world. Let’s face it, the current administration is no friend of France and vice-versa. We who live in the middle of our two opposing governments suffer like children of a broken marriage. Oh how we yearn for a peaceful co-existence!
It will be very interesting to see how the outcome of this election affects Francophiles on the edge of considering changing their lives by spending more time here or making a more permanent move. Living abroad does not have to affect your citizenship with your homeland — even as an expatriate, your citizenship remains in effect unless you should denounce it and many people hold dual and even several citizenships. Becoming a legal “resident” is quite another matter.
Legal advisor, Jean Taquet, addresses this question in this month’s Q and A related to a student who’s visa is about to expire, but wants to stay and work in France. Read Jean’s column in its entirety by visiting /parlerparis/practicalanswers.html. To read ten years worth of Jean’s valuable advice, you may want to get a copy of “The Insider Guide to Practical Answers for Living in France,” a compilation of his monthly columns over ten years — more than 300 questions and answers that are real-life stories from individuals who have lived here before, who have confronted practical situations that will inevitably resemble those you might face when living abroad. Their situations can give you a wealth of experiential information on which you can build a life in France.
Special note: For those of you who subscribe to Jean Taquet’s monthly Q and A column, Jean lost a good portion of the mailing list for technical reasons, so to be sure you will still be getting it…or if you wish to subscribe now, send an email to: [email protected]
A la prochaine…

Astro-Paris by Eric Francis
One Week at a Time
====================
Last night, there were the traditional Election Night gatherings at the old standby locations (Harry’s) and the new ones (The Roadside Diner). The joke is going around that expatriated Americans all over the world, particularly in France, are wondering whether it’s safe to leave their apartments and hotels. There was, however, no predicting the election of 2004, and the highly unusual astrological events that both led up to this election, and which are coming in the next week, suggest that we should be watching the world carefully.
The astrology of the coming seven days is relatively stable. The Sun remains in the sign Scorpio. The Moon is waning toward New in Scorpio on the 12th — so we will be riding the momentum of the total lunar eclipse last week. It is very much a ‘between’ kind of time. Between what? Two entirely different sets of changes, and peaks of events. The next wave commences around the 9th, with a series of very unusual lunar aspects and the beginning of a two-month Mercury retrograde cycle. Speaking of Mercury, that planet changes signs late on the Thursday the 4th from Scorpio to Sagittarius, making a square to Uranus — look out for surprises.
Scorpio Birthdays This Week
In recent columns, I’ve been emphasizing the time frame of two years, going back to 2002. It’s clear that you’ve reached a point of closure regarding events reaching back that far, and are entering a new phase of your life. In letting the past go, there is always a need to forget. The recent actions of certain people close to you may have given you reasons to do just that. Yet precisely what you would be wise to let go of from the past is your old sense of need. We all have relationship needs, though many people consider honest discussion this taboo subject area. I suggest you make your relationship needs clear to you. They should not, at this point, be a mystery. Don’t live like they are.
