Do You Know The Way To Saint-Tropez?

PARLER PARIS: DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO SAINT-TROPEZ?

August 6, 2002

*** NEVER TOO RICH OR TOO THIN–IN SAINT TROPEZ

Saturday morning, the first official day of France’s
vacation period, the streets were as quiet as a Christmas
morning. The train stations were just the opposite and not
a seat was to be had on the TGV (Train de Grande Vitesse)
on route to the Cote d’Azur.

From the train station in Saint Raphael, it’s a 10 minute
walk to the port where a "shuttle" boat in 50 minutes takes
you to Saint Tropez. They’re timed with the trains and the
Office de Tourisme in Saint Tropez
(http://www.ot-saint-tropez.com/, 04 94 19 52 52)
pleasantly helps you map out your Riviera vacation.

The cool ride on the water is the first real hint of what
is to come here in the land of the beautiful, rich, relaxed
and tan. I couldn’t stop humming…"Do you know the way to
Saint-Tropez…" (yes, I know it’s really "San j2999é…")
with the wind in my face and the sun on my legs.

The home my friends rented just outside the port town is
typically Provençal…pink stucco, red tiled roofs, green
shutters, terra cotta tiled floors, bougainvillea climbing
up the walls, surrounded by palms, lavender,
flowers…serene and warm and inviting. From where I sit
now in the "salle a manger,"I can see the pool out the
window, made completely private by virtue of the tall
bushes, but with a magnificent view of the port, its
elegant yachts on blue Mediterranean waters.

In the tiny town of Saint Tropez, there is no shortage of
beautiful jet-setters showing off their expensive cars…we
counted 4 silver-blue Ferraris within 30 minutes of being
there. At the chic 4-star Hotel Byblos, no car parked in
front was less than a Mercedes.

Le Byblos, built in the style of a Mediterranean village,
is just up the hill from the Place des Lices, Saint
Tropez’s main shopping district. The 52 guestrooms and 43
suites with nightly rates of $300 to $1500, is equipped
with the latest facilities, including some rooms with
Jacuzzis. The outdoor heated swimming pool has been called
"sensual" by journalists and is busy this time of year. So
are its restaurants–most famous are the new Spoon Byblos
by Alain Ducasse and its discothèque, Les Caves du Roy.

Today we’re off to the beach at La Plage de la Bouillabaise
for a relaxing , tanning "sejour" with six high school
buddies celebrating our big birthdays together after 30
years of being apart.

I can’t think of a better place and ambience to re-commune
after all these year.

A la prochaine fois (back in Paris),

Adrian

*** PARIS IN WATERCOLORS- AN EXHIBITION

The USO takes you around the world in watercolor…

You are invited to an exhibition of watercolors and prints
by Lisa Rothstein. Come to the vernissage and cocktail,
Friday, September 6 from 17H30 at the USO office: 20, rue
de la Tremoille, Paris, 8th.

Lisa Rothstein was born in New York City and has been
drawing and sketching since she could hold a pencil. After
moving to Paris in 1993, she took up watercolor, studying
with the British watercolorist Stanley Woolston. She has
exhibited numerous times in Paris, and has had pieces
commissioned or acquired by members of the British
aristocracy and international royalty, as well as by the
American Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Paris.

Lisa’s sketches of scenes in such places as France, Greece,
Italy and China are her favorite way of recording her
travels, in the tradition of the journals of Delacroix and
Turner, to capture the feeling of a place in a way that
photos can’t. You can see the evidence by browsing this
site. Some of these originals are still available for
purchase, and several have been selected for a limited
print run of 100, each piece matted, numbered and signed by
the artist.

A rendering in watercolor of a treasured place is a
wonderfully personal gift, perfect for that person who "has
everything." Maybe that’s you!

you or a loved one from your favorite photo, click here:

*** WHERE YOU’LL FIND THE BEST CROQUE MONSIEUR IN PARIS

A reader wrote–"The best one I have had in Paris was at a
little café on a corner between the Musée Picasso and
Carnavalet. It had some sort of toasty puffed coating on
the outside of the bread, and was not just a toasted cheese
sandwich like many places serve. I would kill for the
recipe." Thanks….Carolyn H.

Croque Monsieur (grilled-cheese sandwiches) is a
brasserie’s most typical menu item.

The café isn’t giving out their own recipe, but maybe this
one will get you started:

Croque Monsieur ("Crunch Mister") and Croque Madame
("Crunch Miss") is made of sandwich bread, ham and cheese.
Butter a slice of sandwich bread, add a slice of ham then a
slice of semi-soft cheese and finally cover with another
slice of sandwich bread. Put in oven for 10 minutes and
serve right away (the bread will toast and the cheese will
melt). For a croque-madame, just add an egg on the bread.

And for a great brasserie…(excerpt from "Leeds Good Value
Guide to Paris Restaurants")

LE NEMROD

Traditional Auvergnate French/Cuisine du Terroir and Wine
Bistrot 51, rue du Cherche-Midi at 30, rue Saint-Placide,
Arrondissement 6 Phone 01.45.48.17.05
Métro Sèvres Babylone, Rennes, St. Placide

Inexpensive A La Carte Menu

Make no bones about it–this is as typical a brasserie as
one might wish to find in Paris and few can actually live
up to. A beehive, buzzing with scurrying waiters where
drop-in diners hurriedly seek a vacant table. Don’t go with
too large a party–two to four is best for a squeeze. The
menu is laden with specialties of the Auvergne:
"Charcuterie, Pounti d’Auvergne," "Chou Farci, Pommes à
l’Auvergnate," "Petit salé aux lentilles" and "Saucisse
d’Auvergne, Aligot ou Truffade," to name a few. Then there
is the usual fare of oysters, "Omelettes,"
"Croque-Monsieurs," steak with fries and large composed
salads. Sandwiches are made on Pain Poilâne, ice creams and
sorbets come from the famous Maison de Berthillon.
Specialty wines are promoted and offered by the glass,
pitcher or bottle. Service is fast and particularly jovial
(the waiters seem to get a thrill from its lively character
and exude the same good nature). Le Nemrod won’t likely
make your list of most intimate spots in Paris, but it’s
guaranteed to be fun.
