Setting Up Life In France At La Rentrée

La Rentrée is here. Vacationers are coming back to town and opening up shop again. That’s why I was able to meet with Jean Taquet yesterday. Now that I have my Carte de Résident, I have to pursue my options for setting myself up to take advantage of the health care/social security system in France and facilitate working and doing business here.

Jean is our “guru” on immigration and other civil, criminal and commercial legal issues — he’s a French jurist and associate member of the Delaware Bar Association, French married to an American, who will be speaking at the Living and Investing in France Conference in Washington, DC September 10 – 12. He is also well known for his informative Q and A columns we publish monthly and which we have compiled as one fascinating document known as “The Insider Guide to Practical Answers for Living in France.”

In his just published September Q and A column, Jean touches on business and employment issues. He writes: “I do not feel comfortable with definitive statements about how expensive it is to run a business in France, nor how expensive and cumbersome it is to have employees in France. Indeed, every time I help clients to open a business in France, I am reminded of how different the cost structure is between France and the USA. This is quite obvious when someone presents a business plan to me with figures based on the American market.”

(To subscribe to Jean’s monthly column, send an email to: [email protected] and to read the column in its entirety, click here.)

American attorney Sam Okoshken, a specialist in business and tax, will also be speaking at the conference in more detail on how to start a business and minimize your tax liability. We know how important this is to so many of our conference attendees who have that good ol’ American entrepreneurial spirit and are willing to overcome the odds. One such past attendee is Harriet (“Hat”) Sternstein, who is here in Paris now opening her new gourmet pet bakery and boutique called “Mon Bon Chien!” We all remember when she first told the entire group about her inventive idea…and now it’s becoming a reality. “Hats” off to “Hat” for making her dream come true.

We have a very exciting line-up of speakers joining us in DC, a few of which who were so well received in San Francisco last March have agreed to make a repeat performance…Terry Easton with Swiss Gnomes who closed the conference with a bang is going to do it again, talking about offshore banking, opening a bank account in Europe and getting a European passport for those who are eligible…Claude Nédérovique, a rental professional with France for Rent and Paris Luxury Rentals who manages many vacation apartments quite successfully, is going to help us learn how to make our property investments in France profitable while enjoyable. Read more about the speakers.

On a less serious note, and for those who just want a taste of Paris from the other side of the pond, well-known author and historian Thirza Vallois (“Around and About Paris” and “Romantic Paris”) will be talking about Paris Past, Present and Future over a gourmet dinner at the Westin Grand. You are welcome to join us for this exciting event — so, if you’re in the DC area and would like to be there, just click here to learn more and register.

Ah, La Rentrée — with it comes lots of new activities for Anglophones, so be sure to scroll down to see what’s happening in the upcoming weeks in the City of Light. And be sure to mark your calendar to come to Parler Paris Après Midi on September 14th — I’ll be returning that morning and seeing you that afternoon! Click here for the details.

A la prochaine…

THE WALLACE FOUNTAINS

There are 108 Wallace Fountains with potable water all around Paris streets, square and gardens.

In 1872, Sir Richard Wallace, donated 50 drinking fountains to be established at the most useful points for public refreshment. Installation started in 1875; the first fountain was placed on boulevard de la Villette. The city quickly installed an additional 30 and today there are 108.
