The Appreciation of Art (or the Art of Appreciation?)

Tis the time of year in Paris when no exhibition wall is free, when every museum, gallery and exhibition space is filled with works of art for all to admire. It’s one of the reasons we had the habit of visiting Paris at this time of year before becoming residents…and it’s a reason to make room on the agenda for all there is to offer.

If you have a particular affection for photographic art like I do, then RUN to see the Sebastião Salgado exhibition “Genesis” at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie which just opened September 25th, but on until January 5th, 2014. The lines to enter were down and around the block on Sunday afternoon, so choose your timing carefully — but the wait will be well worth it.

Take your time through all 245 photographs taken over eight years of work, from more than 30 expeditions all over the world. “It’s a great coup for the MEP to welcome the star photographer Sebastião Salgado. The exhibition ‘Genesis’ collects dozens of images taken in every corner of the planet, a homage to nature, wild and majestic. The Brazilian photographer, with his perfected black and white aesthetic and his exacting chiaroscuros, immortalizes elephants, whales, Indians and steep landscapes, showing us the beauty of regions that man has not – yet – spoiled.” (Time Out) Putting it in simple terms, what he was able to capture on film is like nothing you can imagine seeing for yourself in any lifetime. Yes, Salgado is a star.

The 17th edition of Paris Photo is coming up, too, this November 14-17 at the Grand Palais. One-hundred-thirty-six galleries from all over the world will be displaying their best artists’ work under the glass and iron dome including 28 new participating galleries and 28 publishers offering up photography books.

Allow A LOT of time to see it all. In fact, plan several excursions there if you can. Part of the fair includes a “Private Collection” exhibit of works owned by private collectors such as Harald Falckenberg’s collection showcasing his perspective on the medium of photography. Then there are the “Recent Acquisitions” exhibit which will present new photography collections from three international institutions: the Instituto Moreira Salles from Rio, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto and the Museum Folkwang from Essen. Under the  theme, “Open Book,” Martin Parr’s collection will present a set of Protest Photo Books — photography pamphlets covering uprisings from the second half of the 20th-century to today.

There’s even more in store, so put it on your calendar for a ‘must do and see!’

Meanwhile, if you’re a collector, you may want to attend some of the upcoming photo auctions such as these three at Christie’s where perhaps you’ll find a bargain if not a treasure! (christies.com/):

If you can’t wait till November, then mark your calendar for this week at the FIAC — the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain — October 24-27 also at the Grand Palais. One-hundred-eighty-four international galleries will be presenting their best artists’ works. On Thursday night, several participating Paris galleries will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. so there are no excuses! See fiac.com/fr for the list.

There’s also the Georges Braque at the Grand Palais (18 September 2013-6 January 2014) [grandpalais.fr/]; The Springtime of the Renaissance at the Louvre (26 September 2013-6 January 2014) [louvre.fr/]; the Roy Lichtenstein at the Pompidou Centre (3 July 2013-4 November 2013) [centrepompidou.fr/]; the Frida Kahlo/Diego Rivera: Art in fusion at the Musée de l’Orangerie (9 October 2013-13 January 2014) [musee-orangerie.fr]; Masculine/Masculine: The Nude Man in Art from 1800 to the Present Day at the Musée d’Orsay (24 September 2013-2 January 2014) [musee-orsay.fr/]; Désirs et volupté, Victorian masterpieces at the Musée Jacquemart-André (13 September-20 January 2014) musee-jacquemart-andre.com/]; The Renaissance and the Dream: Bosch, Véronèse, Greco at the Musée du Luxembourg (9 October 2013- 26 January 2014) [museeduluxembourg.fr]; Etrusques, Un hymne à la vie at the Musée Maillol (18 September 2013-9 February 2014) [museemaillol.com/]; the Erwin Blumenfeld (1897-1969), Photographies, dessins et photomontages at the Jeu de Paume (15 Octobre 2013-26 January 2014) [jeudepaume.org]; the Biennale images of the world at the Quai Branly (17 September-17 November) [quaibranly.fr]; Serge Poliakoff, the dream of forms at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (18 October 2013-23 February 2014) [mam.paris.fr]…and much more!

Can we take tim to appreciate it all? Don’t think of it as the appreciation of art. Think of it as ‘the art of appreciation.’

A la prochaine…
