Visiting Our Paris Legacies
Every year in September we get a glimpse of France’s loveliest sites…thanks to the Journées Européennes du Patrimoine, this being the 21st edition, September 18th and 19th. And every year it’s themed — this year Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, Minister of Culture and Communication, has organized the event around the theme of “Patrimoine, sciences et techniques” (“Inheritance, sciences and technology”).
Under this theme particular sites will exceptionally be open to the public…monuments, archaeological excavations, science and technology related sites within many sectors: factories, aeronautical observatories, space studies, maritime or related to transport, hospitals, teaching and research, famous laboratories of researchers, scientific collections of instruments, and more.
The tourist office is hailing two sites as “Coup de Coeur” (love at first sight):
Société générale, central agency in the 9th Arrondissement classified as a historic building. Open free Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. http://www.societegenerale.fr
Laroche House – foundation Corbusier (1923 – 1925) in the 16th Arrondissement. Open free Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. http://www.fondationlecorbusier.fr
There are almost 200 sites in Paris alone to visit, so choose carefully to take in as much as you can in just two days! For the complete list, visit http://www.journeesdupatrimoine.culture.fr/
Expect long lines to enter some of the top picks, so either go early or allow time and have patience. My favorites, if you haven’t already visited them, are:
* The Hôtel de Ville de Paris — normally only shown by private tour and one of Paris’ most beautiful buildings.
* The Palais du Luxembourg – Senate — may be your only chance to see the inner chambers of the Senate.
* Palais de l’Elysée – the President’s Palace — but expect the longest lines! Wonder if M. Chirac will be there to greet you?
* Assemblée Nationale – Palais Bourbon and Hôtel de Lassay — again only open to the public by tour, so take this special occasion to feast your eyes on the primary site of lawmakers.
For more information, visit the kiosk in the garden of the Palais Royal, by telephone information is available at 0 820 561 561 (0,118 euros a minute) to guide and direct you or visit the site at http://www.journeesdupatrimoine.culture.fr/
In honor of this special weekend, today’s Property Picks are special properties offered not by agencies, but by the Notaires de Paris!
A la prochaine…
