David Downie June 2021
David Downie is one of our regular guests because he’s a prolific author and one of our best! At Après-Midi, he presented his newest mystery novel, Red Riviera, scheduled to be published June 25th.
He is the award-winning author of three previous novels and over a dozen acclaimed nonfiction books translated into a variety of foreign languages, including French, Italian, Chinese and Korean. His articles and essays have appeared in anthologies, magazines and newspapers worldwide.
David was born in San Francisco and graduated from UC Berkeley and Brown University. He is married to photographer Alison Harris and since 1986 he has divided his time between Italy, France and California.
In this appearance at Après-Midi, with about 60 attendees, David showed promotional videos and read excerpts from Red Riviera. I began reading the book with an author’s galley and found it so far to be a serious page-turner!
Here’s what’s being said about the novel:
“Red Riviera had me in its clutches from the start—and refused to let go. I gasped. I laughed out loud. And that was just the first chapter! A shocking premise, a stunning locale, and a complex web of history, politics and crime that somehow made perfect sense in the end. The pacing is flawless, the engaging characters leave you curious for more. Another, please!”—Matthew Félix, award-winning author of A Voice Beyond Reason
“Marvelous! Red Riviera is so well plotted, so sensitive to present and past Italian history, so deep in characterization, that I want to see more of Daria Vinci, Inspector Morbido (I love his name), and that 100-year-old marquise! What a cast. A grand, unputdownable read until the lights go out.”—Ronald C. Rosbottom, bestselling author of When Paris Went Dark: The City of Light Under German Occupation, and Sudden Courage: Youth in France Confront the Germans, 1940-45
