Just Imagine the Possibilities

A million dollar view on the Côte d'Azur
This could be your view on the Côte d'Azur...

As I write this, Americans still don’t have a clear answer as to who will be leading the country come 2021. Either way, regardless of which candidate wins the race, it will be many years before the U.S. can recuperate from the divisiveness we’ve seen blossom over the past four years under this administration. As a result, Americans are fleeing the country seeking visas to other countries in numbers never seen before. The “land of opportunity” has had “an oppressive year of political violence, racial strife and an uncontrolled pandemic that has kept families locked in their homes for months — with no clear end in sight.” (Source: the Washington Post)

Biden ahead in the electoral college

There are numerous articles on the subject because it’s real. This is fact. According to the Washington Post article, Americans who have given up their citizenship almost tripled from just over 2,000 in 2019 to almost 6,000 in just the first six months of this year…and still counting. The pandemic curbed the numbers, but that could just be temporary.

Americans leaving are going everywhere. Canada is a first and logical choice for many, but France is high on the list thanks to the caché France holds for being both beautiful and welcoming to immigrants, particularly American immigrants who normally come with financial means. The consulates have reported record numbers of applicants. We on the front line know it. Never before have we had so many clients seeking consultations, participants in our Zoominars and property buyers willing to purchase sight-unseen. They’re hoping that sometime in the not too distant future, they will be able to actually visit, stay in the property they’ve purchased and possibly live the rest of their lives there.

There are a few challenges, however, not discounting the emotional difficulties of giving up one’s own home country. Obtaining visas is the first step and highest on the list as the consulates have reduced their services during the pandemic, although that will change as the pandemic wanes. Still, it may be months before they reopen. But Americans are welcome applicants and have only to prove they have housing, can support themselves and won’t be dependent on the French health care system…at least in the beginning. The Local, France’s news in English, just published quite a good article about getting your visa you might find useful. For those who need further assistance, we have immigration attorneys we can recommend to get you easier through the process.

For those wishing to make a purchase, getting financing is another hurdle. Rates are well under 2 percent making mortgages highly desirable, but qualifying is tougher…although not impossible. The best candidates for a loan are under the age of 60 and have salaried jobs. Older Americans or those who are self-employed are considered a higher risk to the lenders and may have more difficulty qualifying, but we work with experienced brokers who are doing the heavy lifting for our clients who must meet the toughest challenges.

Finding a home is another challenge, but fortunately, that’s where we can make the biggest difference. We are Americans helping Americans find their feet on the ground, whether it be for rental or purchase. Making commitments sight unseen has become more the norm than not, under the current situation. We can be trusted to know good property and have the ability to match a property perfectly well with its new owner or tenant.

The “pitch” here is less about working with “us” as it is to convince you it’s entirely doable to take the plunge and to make a change that will improve the quality of your life forever…by moving to France. Regardless of where in France you decide to hang your hat, whether it be in a “pied-à-terre” in the heart of Paris, a terraced apartment on the Côte d’Azur, a villa in Provence, or a village house in the provinces…you will have a quality of life you never dreamed possible.

A bird's eye view of Paris, France

You could have a “pied-à-terre” in Paris…

Just imagine beauty all around you. Imagine an infrastructure that provides excellent and inexpensive public transportation. Imagine the finest health care the world can offer at one-tenth the cost of the U.S. Imagine culture, art, cuisine, fashion, and the finest products available to you wherever you reside. Imagine having the ability to travel all over Europe by high-speed train, for the cost of a dinner out, to cities you never dreamed you’d see in your lifetime. Just imagine living in a world that actually cares about its people, to ensure that everyone has an education, healthcare, and a safety net for their retirement or at times of unemployment. Just imagine the possibilities.
