Crossing Over…the Ocean and the Cultural Divide

4-28-25_main_crossing-the-cultural-divide-1

C Dans l’Air on France TV 5 last week aired an hour-long segment titled “Reculades en série…mais ou va Trump?” (Serial backtracking…but where is Trump going?). In their report, they featured a story about Americans moving to France, and in particular to Nice. About 53 minutes into the show, the segment reports on our activity helping Americans move over—featuring our client, Lillian Palmer, in Nice—and the explosion we’ve seen in the Riviera town. Our consultation clients, Bill Lucas and Jeff Howard, were featured in the midst of our consultation!

AT FRENCHIES: CROSSING THE CULTURAL DIVIDE

Saturday afternoon, I made a one-hour presentation titled “Crossing the Cultural Divide” on a webinar with AT Frenchies Club, led by Gigi Kuhn, and joined by Tom and Alex, the founders of the club.

It’s a presentation I’ve given before and one of my favorite topics. While my take on the subject gets to the roots and heart of our cultural differences without getting too deep into the symptoms, there’s always room for fun questions and lots of laughs.

MAY DAY PICNIC ON THE GRASS IN NICE

This week in Nice will be both challenging, productive and fun. I arrived this afternoon and don’t have a minute to spare, except for a relaxing Labor Day, picnicking on the Coulée Verte. To all those who wish to join us, it’s an informal gathering so just bring your own picnic goodies, something to spread out on the grass, and your good cheer. I’ll be there from 12 noon onward…you can show up any time you like. Anyone and everyone is invited. There are no limits to how many people we can fit on the grass!

You’ll find us in the quadrant between rues Alberti and Gubernatis, where there are trees for some shade and close to the statue of Marshal André Masséna. See the maps here for a more precise location. There is no need to email me to RSVP! You either come or you don’t. And bring as many friends as you like or show up alone!

BABY ON BOARD

Next week, my daughter and her five-month-old son are coming home to France for the summer and I’m gearing up. Babies need a lot of things, very new to me since the last time I had a baby almost 40 years ago! Amazon was a godsend, as we ordered up everything we needed, including a six-drawer dresser for his clothing, a foldable bathtub for his bath-time, changing pad, diaper pail, play mat, crib, linens, etc., etc., etc. My favorite item of all is the baby potty (he’s been in training since the day he was born) that plays music when he tinkles in it! Can you believe that? What they won’t think of next!

Special Note: Here’s how you can watch House Hunters International if you’re outside the U.S.:

1. Use a Streaming Service
Discovery+ often carries House Hunters International (in many countries where Discovery+ is available). Amazon Prime Video sometimes offers it (but you may have to pay per season or episode).

2. Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network)
A VPN can make it look like you’re browsing from the U.S.

Then you can: Access HGTV’s website or app, use U.S. streaming services like Hulu+ Live TV, YouTube TV, or Discovery+ U.S.

For a good VPN, we recommend Express VPN.

Note: Some services are getting smarter about blocking VPNs, but a lot of people still successfully use them.

3. YouTube Clips and Episodes
HGTV uploads some full episodes or extended clips on YouTube. It’s not the entire catalog, but you can watch a lot for free without geoblocking.

4. Buy or Rent Episodes
On Google Play Movies, iTunes, or Amazon, you can sometimes buy specific seasons or episodes, no matter where you are.

Summary:
If you want the full easy access, getting Discovery+ or using a VPN to stream via U.S. platforms is your best bet.

A la prochaine…
