Once we realize that staying in a hotel just doesn’t make us feel at home in the City of Light, it’s not long before we surf the Net to find the perfect pied-à-terre to hang our beret for a week or two. If you picked up this month’s “Paris Voice” (distributed free all over the city the last 25 or so years!), then you may have noticed my complete paroles on the subject…an industry that has become a “raison d’être” for lots of entrepreneurial spirits, including yours truly. Here’s the scenario… As tourists we don’t think twice about booking a hotel. And hotels can be absolutely delightful, with a concierge to give us directions, restaurant in the lobby, room service and instant taxi or shuttles. They are perfect spots for our conferences and workshops so that attendees can fall out of bed and into their seats at the conference room with a 2-minute commute and full breakfast belly. Fresh linens daily, maid service, stocked mini-bar, TV and Internet…all of it’s there and you have not a care in the world. But it’s not home. And once you’ve got the bug to become a Parisian, “home” is where you want to be. That’s when the ads for short-term vacation rental apartments start to catch your eye. So, next time you plan your trip, you search the net and settle on an apartment in the same neighborhood as your favorite hotel or you venture to some other “happening” part of the city like Le Marais or rue Montorgueil. This time ’round you’ve got a key in hand and maybe you’re climbing a few flights of narrow stairs with your overstuffed luggage, but you enter into a little world you can call your own for that week or two and become a “real Parisian.” Then the apartment becomes your home away from home on every subsequent trip to Paris and perhaps you even become friendly with the owner or the agent you rented from. Then the light bulb goes off in your head… “I wonder how much he paid for this? Let’s see, I’m spending X-amount renting for the week…so, if he rents it only half of the year and uses it himself the other half, then that’s 26 X what I paid and he might even be covering his mortgage! And if he sold the apartment a few years from now, he could make a pretty nice profit, too!” It’s not a goldmine for everyone who attempts it, but it can certainly add a new dimension to an otherwise run-of-the-mill existence without costing more. And there is lots of help along the way: consultants, conferences, search services, attorneys and notaires, architects, insurance agents…you name it, it’s all here for the English-speaking world. I talk with folks about this very scenario many times a week. In fact, just yesterday, I consulted with a couple from California who love Paris and dream of being here several months a year and whose “light bulb” went off just recently. And I get such pleasure from helping put a perspective on the picture to turn the dreams and questions into reality. In the last few years I’ve seen dozens of people do it…first rent, then buy, then rent it out themselves, quite successfully and happily. It’s become my own personal “raison d’être” — to see Americans, Canadians, Aussies and Brits follow their hearts to the ‘place of all places’ and discover MORE than just the city. Two free community events in June will feature speakers and provide information on preventing childhood obesity and new insights into diabetes and obesity relating to women’s health. According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 30% of children 6 to 10 years of age are overweight and 15% are obese, higher than ever before. Childhood obesity can lead to diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases which were once only prevalent among adults. Saturday, June 4th at 10 a.m. Obesity plays a significant role in causing poor health in women, negatively affecting quality of life and shortening lifespan.
