Paris Chocolates For The Ladies Of The Evening

The invitation to the 10th Annual Salon du Chocolate was sealed by a chocolate colored silk ribbon and that was only the beginning for this first class affair at Hall 5 of Paris Expo, Métro Porte de Versailles.

Almost 150 exhibitors are showing off their “créations” now through Monday (what a great way to celebrate Halloween and All Saints Day!) — all in white, milk and dark chocolates, in every imaginable taste and style configuration. We tasted chocolate green tea truffles offered by Japanese women in traditional dress, chewy fudgy macaroons, biscuits and fruits dipped in white, milk and dark chocolate sauce served in microwave-able glass pots, mini-timbales of rich fruit compote topped in chocolate, chocolate and anise liqueur and my favorite — Belgian chocolate bars laced with lavender.

Mayor Delanoë and his entourage breezed in for a front row seat at the annual fashion show where designers’ creations from the past 10 years were modeled by tall gorgeous women accompanied by the designers themselves and even one “petite fille” came on stage in a dress made of “Smarties” by Nestle.

Along with the Statue of Liberty in larger than life size were chocolate sculptures of the Eiffel Tower, a Japanese Pagoda and host of others. A chef at one stand was carving a pumpkin from a huge solid block of chocolate. At first glance, you would have thought that the corner filled with beautiful flowers was a Paris “fleuriste,” but on second look, the flowers were solid chocolate! And an artist from New York displayed paintings of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor made from chocolate paint that he admitted he has taken to cleaning the brushes with his mouth!

So, go hungry, take in the fabulous aromas, talk to the masters of chocolate creation and indulge!

Parler Paris Readers, I have three special announcements:

1. Sunday evening, November 7th at Paris Soirées, I will share with you my take on Paris real estate — how to best find the pied-à-terre of your dreams, where the best bargains are for future appreciation, which areas of the city make the best short-term rental property and how to get the best return on your property investment. I’ll be armed with the latest property prices and statistics, the know-how to maneuver the complicated French inheritance tax and capital gains tax laws and how make the most of owning an apartment in Paris or a home in France. Email Patricia Laplante Collins at [email protected] for more information and to reserve.

2. Mark December 29th on your calendar for the Invest in France Conference in Paris! — One full day to learn the best ways to watch your money and real estate investment grow before your very eyes…all while gazing at the world’s most famous monument over a frothy café crème. We’ll be sending you complete information within the next few days, but if you want to be notified by email directly, email Schuyler Hoffman at [email protected]

3. Keep your afternoon of November 9th open to come to Parler Paris Après Midi — You are invited to come for drinks and share your questions and comments about what it takes to create a life here, own property and enjoy what France has to offer. It is also an opportunity to network with other Parler Paris readers. Visit /parlerparis/apresmidi.html for the details.
