Paris In Mind

Oh lord, another book about Paris! Not only is Paris the most visited city in the world, it’s the most written about. This very newsletter is proof of that. Seems we just can’t get enough of the subject and neither could Jennifer Lee.

Just out on the shelves is her newest book, Paris in Mind, a compilation of essays by some of Paris’ most illustrious authors…from as many centuries ago as Thomas Jefferson, as personal as Slyvia Beach’s story of how she started Shakespeare and Company to as funny as David Sedaris’ praise of the respectful French movie-goer who never utters a word during any film.

I found myself reading Naomi Barry’s exposé of French chocolate as the French genleman next to me on the flight home from Dublin offered me a taste of Irish chocolate. How synchronistic! I then recognized the names of two friends who had contributed essays: Maxine Shur who first came to Paris in a camper van at the age of 22 and Deborah Baldwin who years ago was a co-volunteer with me at a Paris Anglophone organization and was so impressed by the daily clean-up of the men in green that she was compelled to tell us how many tons of dog poop are picked up daily.

While none of the stories are Jennifer Lee’s, she has brilliantly organized 29 decidedly unique points of view of Paris from the masters of the written word all in one sweet volume that will touch your heart and your funny bone.
