I arrived in Nice last Saturday night and visited this property first thing Monday morning. The contractor had said to me last week, “I’m not going to send you any photos because I can’t wait to see your smiling face when you walk in the door!” With only 11 days away from completion, he and Martine di Mattéo have a hard job to complete it, but they are both very proud of being on time with the project, during only four months of construction—taking it from the wreck that it was, tearing down every single wall and rebuilding it all from scratch. Every single inch in the apartment is brand spanking new.
Scott, our contractor, was right. I was smiling so big that my face hurt! The apartment is even more amazing than I imagined…and it still looks like a war zone! But, it won’t within the next week-and-a-half as the pieces of the puzzle all come together. The new windows, the best money could buy, keep out so much noise that Scott said they had to get used to the quiet! He showed me how the blinds come down electrically and you don’t hear them at all, either. He mirrored the utility/coat closet door so it absolutely disappears and thanks to the strategic mirroring in one of the bedrooms, the apartment looks and feels double the size. The tiles in the bathrooms are the most luscious colors ever—even more beautiful than the sea and sun itself. All in all, it’s heaven and I am jealous that it’s not my own!
Martine is arriving in Nice after Christmas with her Paris crew to complete the custom-built furnishings, hang the drapes and make our traditional trip to Ikea to buy some of the accessories. I am staying after New Year’s to install it all and perhaps spend a night or two there to make sure everything is working as it should. We’re planning on popping a cork on New Year’s Eve in the apartment to celebrate its miraculous completion and beauty.
